ISLAND WOMEN COMMITTEES

Volunteering exemplifies the spirit of our organization more than anything else. We can always use a hand and volunteering is a great way to meet people and make new friends.

Island Women Members are encouraged to volunteer their time by joining any one or more of the active committees of the organization. Committees often meet and work on projects independent of the general membership. There is a wide range of opportunities for Island Women to be active within the organization and in support of the Pleasure Island community.

Get involved

It's simple, just come to a meeting and see what we’re currently working on! Find out what interests you most and start getting involved whenever you’re ready. We encourage all members to volunteer for something that fulfills one of their passions. If we don’t offer an opportunity that you’d like to get involved with, we invite all members to bring new ideas to the general membership meeting.

Each and every one of our members has strengths and skills that are different from those of the next woman. If you don’t think you have something to offer, you’re wrong. There will always be something you can do to help. There are many moving parts to our organization and it takes volunteers like you to keep the parts moving.

Our 2018 Committees:

All of Island Women committees consist of a group of members with a variety of talents. The frequency of committee meetings depends on the project and the season. All Island Women are welcome to join any committee and to share their unique talents, working to help committees reach their goals and objectives.

Fundraising

Reusable Bags - Picture a beach community with no plastic bags anywhere; this is the goal of the Island Women Reusable Bag Committee. Plastic bags find their way onto our beaches, into our waterways, harming our wildlife and our environment. The is our major fundraiser which raises money to support the projects and programs that support the mission of Island Women. This strong group of women is responsible for getting sponsor commitments and for conceptual design and production of the annual bag.

Specialty Flocking - Picture a flock of bright and cheerful pink flamingoes in the yard of your family member or friend who is celebrating a special event. In addition, the flock is led by a specially-decorated flamingo, to reflect the nature of the celebration. A spin-off of the highly successful Beach Bound Project that brought beach wheelchairs to both Carolina and Kure Beaches, this committee raises money for community involvement.

Missed Pleasure Island Pageant – Held annually in February, this committee works with Island Men to put on this historically sold out event featuring brave male contestants who take a walk on the wild-side in a full pageant gear including swimwear, talent and evening attire. This annual event has become an important fundraiser for both organizations.

Flip Flop Ball - The First Flip Flop Ball was held in the fall of 2016. This event was a huge success and raised $3,500 for the local HELP Center in Carolina Beach. A dance fundraiser with Flip Flops as the theme, the event also includes a Silent Auction, with all auction items donated by Island Women members. Island Women plans that this will become an annual fundraising event.

Resource Development – Newly formed in 2017, this committee is vital to the life and financial well-being of Island Women. The committee is responsible for ensuring the financial resources necessary to support the mission of Island Women by fielding and assessing new possibilities and evaluating the success of ongoing initiatives.

Community Involvement

Martha’s Kitchen – A team of more than 50 members strong, this committee supports the mission of Martha’s Kitchen in Carolina Beach – feeding the needy living on or near Pleasure Island a hot meal every Tuesday and Thursday evening. Island Women is responsible for The First Tuesday and Third Thursday dinner services, both working in the kitchen and serving meals to those folks who have come for dinner. Our volunteers also make the Tuesday/Thursday food pick-ups at Harris Teeter and the twice-monthly pick-ups from Food Lion.

Literacy – This relatively new committee formed in 2014, is now charged with exploring opportunities, recommending options, and coordinating the implementation of approved literacy initiatives. Our volunteers collaborate with the New Hanover County Library assisting with literacy initiatives and activities. Our members volunteer as reading coaches to our local elementary schools and the National Center for Outdoor Education and Adventure. We coordinate efforts for specific projects for Pleasure Island, including the Story WalkTM in 2014, and today for the Little Free Libraries project.

Local School/Student Support – Our volunteers work closely with the counselors at our local schools to support students in need. We collect school supplies and food products at our monthly meetings, respond to specific requests from school counselors to provide supplies and/or needed clothing for students.

Beautification – The first initiatives of Island Women centered around the landscape of Carolina Beach. Today, whether the group is maintaining the gardens at the Carolina Beach Marina, planting the spring and summer annuals at the Boardwalk, or taking care of the native garden at Kure Beach Town Hall, you can count on Island Women to have a presence.  This group has also taken on the Christmas by the Sea project of decorating the Gazebo for this annual seasonal event. Our objective is to do what we can to keep the island beautiful and make the Christmas display fun for everyone.

Environment - The environment has long been at the forefront of Island Women’s efforts. Whether its raising awareness about the importance of recycling, working to rid the island of plastic bags, working to ban cigarette butts from the beach, participating in beach sweeps, you can count on a team of Island Women to be there pitching in.

Sea Turtle Project – Each year the Island Women, through our members’ involvement with the Pleasure Island Sea Turtle Project, are assigned a sea turtle nest to watch over each summer. This is a highlight of the summer for so many of our members and all are welcome to join in.

Member Betterment & Support

Membership - Welcomes and provides new members with information that will help them become active members of Island Women. This is the team that also maintain and updates the IW Membership Directory.

Member Care – Provides meals and support to Island Women members in their time of need.

Morning & Evening Book Talk - We meet monthly to discuss selected books. We are introduced to new and different books and genres as our members suggest their favorites. The discussion is usually led by the member who suggests the book. Our choices vary widely. Our group goals are to enjoy reading while being informed and educated with a social side.

Social/Health/Enrichment (SHE) – Charged with strengthening the social fabric of Island Women, this committee is responsible for promoting education, cultural expression, and mentoring among women through a calendar of events for the betterment of Island Women members.
